    If you only learn one concept from this entire site, make it this one. Expected Value (EV) tells you the average amount you'd win or lose per bet if you repeated it thousands and thousands of times. It collapses all the possible outcomes into a single, honest number.

    Formula: EV = Σ (Outcome × Probability)

    It looks dry on paper. In practice, it's the most useful lens you can apply to any decision involving uncertainty.

    A Simple Example to Build Intuition

    Say a friend offers you a coin flip game. Heads, you win €2. Tails, you lose €1.

    EV = (0.5 × €2) + (0.5 × –€1) = €1.00 – €0.50 = +€0.50

    You'd take that bet all day long — it's worth 50 cents to you every time you play. The thing is, casino games almost never offer positive EV to the player. That's the whole point.

    EV in Roulette

    A €1 straight-up bet on European roulette:

    • Win: 35 × (1/37) = €0.9459
    • Lose: –1 × (36/37) = –€0.9730
    • EV = –€0.027 per bet

    Practical Example: Two Ways to Spend a Friday Night

    You've set aside €100 for entertainment. Here's what EV reveals about two different options:

    Option A — 200 spins on a 96% RTP slot at €0.50 per spin:

    • Total wagered: €100
    • EV: €100 × –0.04 = –€4.00
    • You'd expect to finish with about €96

    Option B — 50 hands of blackjack at €2 per hand using basic strategy:

    • Total wagered: €100
    • EV: €100 × –0.005 = –€0.50
    • You'd expect to finish with about €99.50

    Why EV Trumps Individual Outcomes

    Here's where people get tripped up. "I won €200 on slots last weekend!" Sure — and that's wonderful. But one evening's result tells you nothing about the game's long-term math. You might win €200 one night and lose €300 over the next three.
