The Mathematics: The odds of hitting the Megabucks top prize are approximately 1 in 50 million. For perspective: you're more likely to be struck by lightning in any given year (about 1 in 1.2 million). The win is real, but treating it as a reasonable expectation is where things go sideways.
How Progressive Jackpots Actually Work
Megabucks and similar progressive systems take a small slice of every bet placed across a network of linked machines and funnel it into a growing jackpot. This creates those eye-catching prize pools, but it comes at a cost:
- The base game's RTP is lower than non-progressive equivalents — the progressive contribution has to come from somewhere
- The odds of the top prize are astronomical by design
- The jackpot needs to reach certain thresholds before the progressive contribution meaningfully affects the overall expected value
In other words, the huge prize is funded by the collective losses of millions of players. Someone wins eventually. Most don't.
The MIT Blackjack Team

Through the 1990s, a group of MIT students and graduates used card counting and coordinated team play to extract an estimated $5 million from casinos. Their approach was methodical:
- Spotters sat at tables making minimum bets while silently tracking the card count

- The team rotated across casinos to avoid recognition
Why it worked: Blackjack has dependent events. Cards already dealt change the odds for remaining cards. When the deck is rich in high cards, the player gains a small but exploitable edge. The MIT team didn't cheat — they applied mathematics to a game that, unusually, allows for it.
Why it ended: Casinos got wise. Shared databases of known counters, multiple-deck shoes, mid-shoe reshuffling, and outright bans eventually made the operation unsustainable. The team's story is now more famous than their profits.
Archie Karas: The Rise and Fall (1992–1995)
Archie Karas arrived in Las Vegas in December 1992 with $50. Over the next two and a half years, through a combination of pool hustling, poker, and dice games, he built that into roughly $40 million.
Then he lost it all.
His story gets told as an incredible winning streak, and it is. But it's equally instructive as a case study in risk:
- Risk tolerance: Karas routinely played at stakes where a single bad session could — and eventually did — wipe him out
- The hot hand illusion: Winning streaks happen, but they don't predict future wins
- Mathematical inevitability: Given enough time at negative expected value games (and enough of Karas's play involved negative EV), losses will accumulate

- Average days to hit: 49,836,032 ÷ 4,800 = 10,382 days — about 28 years

The Uncomfortable Truth About These Stories

There's nothing wrong with finding these stories thrilling. They are thrilling. But confusing thrilling with probable is exactly the kind of reasoning error that casinos quietly benefit from.
